I've sat in plenty of trainings that say "you don't have to understand someone's identity to respect it"--which is true! But it misses an opportunity for a stronger sense of solidarity built around shared values and interests, instead opting for surface-level compliance.

i think we've all got to let go of the dehumanizing fantasy that interactions with other human beings are some kind of skills test that we can "win" at by saying everything exactly "right". you can know all the right words and still be totally loathesome to be around
