Georgia HB 177: Family judges could include pets in protective orders from abuse

A proposed law in Georgia:

"Fear of losing the pets kept Heatherland in the relationship longer than they otherwise would have stayed, they said. But the General Assembly recently approved legislation that could have made it easier for Heatherland and others to leave abusive partners.

If Gov. Brian Kemp signs House Bill 177, people who’ve experienced domestic violence could ask judges to include family pets in temporary protective orders. The bill passed both chambers with overwhelming support.

House Public and Community Health Chairwoman Sharon Cooper, a Marietta Republican, said she sponsored the bill because it has become more common for abusers to threaten the pets as a way to keep victims from leaving. Abusers know how important pets have become, she said.

If HB 177 becomes law, it would create a space on the form to allow those petitioning for a temporary protective order to indicate they would like to include a pet. HB 177 would then allow a judge to determine plans for a pet when deciding to grant a temporary protective order. Judges would not be required to include a pet in their order."

Georgia is discussing this legislation now:

”After last year’s deadly shooting at Apalachee High School, lawmakers vowed to ensure students could learn safely and get mental health support as needed. The House passed House Bill 268, sponsored by Republican state Rep. Holt Persinger who represents Barrow County, 159-13. It would instruct schools to create a plan identifying the ability for threats to breach the buildings.

The Senate passed Senate Bill 17, which would require local school systems to implement a panic alert system to coordinate between first responders in the event of an emergency. Senators also passed Senate Bill 61, which addresses children who make “terroristic threats,” and Senate Bill 179, which would require schools to quickly communicate about disciplinary problems with transferring students.

House Bill 268 is more likely to move forward, and lawmakers have amended the language — namely removing a provision that would have required schools to develop a database with information about students who have made credible threats.

And two bills that deal with school zone cameras that automatically ticket drivers who are speeding have been resurrected for consideration. One would ban the cameras, while another would give motorists more warning before they reach them.”

A couple days ago, on June 2, regarding the possibility that he may be sentenced to prison or house arrest, Trump said: "I'm not sure the public would stand for it...You know, at a certain point, there's a breaking point."

Joe Scarborough highlights that this is "coded language for a man who started the worst riot — political riot — in American history in Washington, DC since the Civil War." (2:57–3:08) Trump knows that certain individuals and groups will hear it as a call to violence.

Rachel Maddow

Yesterday, on June 3, Rachel Maddow said: "These threats, and the harassment and intimidation of people who are involved in the legal system — people who are witnesses, jurors, prosecutors, judges, court personnel — Trump, I mean, encourages it, indirectly, every time he makes individual people in these legal proceedings a personal target for his criticism and vitriol and often his lies. He's never, ever discouraged his supporters from mounting the kind of harassment and intimidation campaigns that they have against everyone involved in these cases — including, like, the court clerks and the family members of the judges, and the witnesses themselves and their families too. And it's every time, right? It's not just this court case." (0:52–1:35)

Regarding Trump's "breaking point" comment, Maddow states the obvious: "It is a threat. It is the same threat he always makes because he wants us all to feel threatened." (3:35–3:53)

She then explains: Although Trump would like to imagine that many USAmericans will riot in the streets to defend him, this doesn't happen en masse because most USAmericans find it reasonable that he was indicted (and now convicted) in a court, according to normal legal processes, for crimes he allegedly committed (and now has been legally proven to have committed). What does happen, unfortunately, is that his most dedicated supporters threaten the people involved in the legal process. That's their tactic. They don't need to make large protests in the streets. Through their threats, they convey the idea that any of us could be threatened.

Trump, talking to Dr. Phil

Trump is talking about jailing his opponents. In an interview that aired June 6, Trump told Dr. Phil: "Revenge does take time. And sometimes revenge can be justified."

This is an important question. Trump’s agenda of “revenge” and “retribution,” as against what? He’s largely escaped all accountability. He did what he wanted as “president,” regardless of the law. He continues to rake in huge sums. Revenge for what? For the imagined slights. Revenge against YOU.

Violence goes on-air to stoke anti-immigrant hate

It was always going to be like this on Fox. Fox was always headed in this direction.

"Fox News host Sean Hannity’s interview with former GOP New York City mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa took a shocking turn when members of Sliwa’s Guardian Angels group gave — live on air — what Sliwa described as “a little pain compliance” to a person he said was a migrant and who he claimed had been caught shoplifting.

The camera turned to film the members of the Guardian Angels bringing the unidentified person to the ground. Hannity eventually cut away from the scene but later returned to Sliwa to find out what had gone down."

LA Times: Police collect info to protect themselves after they kill someone

Recently, in the LA Times:

"For years, law enforcement agencies across California have been trained to quickly question family members after a police killing in order to collect information that, among other things, is used to protect the involved officers and their department, an investigation by the Los Angeles Times and the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism has found."

The Times and the Investigative Reporting Program documented 20 instances of the practice by 15 law enforcement agencies across the state since 2008. Attorneys specializing in police misconduct lawsuits say those cases are just a fraction of what they describe as a routine practice.

'I have seen this over and over and over again,' said Dale Galipo, a Los Angeles attorney who has filed hundreds of police-shooting lawsuits."

'Don't come to school tomorrow': Receiving a threat

According to the Dallas Morning News:

In January 2023, in Texas, a boy said: "Don't come to school tomorrow." A 13-year-old girl feared it was a threat. According to school authorities, in such situations, the "appropriate" action she should have taken would have been either "to notify a trusted adult" or to use her school's "anonymous reporting options." Instead, she confided to her friends in a group chat. A rumor spread, and the school responded by disciplining her, planning to send her to the Disciplinary Alternative Education Program for 30 days. Her mother intervened, and the school recanted.

"Police quickly determined the boy alleged to have made the comment did not have access to a gun," the story says. The boy later told officials he made the comment because "I wanted to scare them. ... I wanted to because I think that it was funny. I expected them to tell." After that, however, he denied having made the comment at all.

The underlying problem is that school shootings happen and students are justifiably anxious about what they should do when they hear something that sounds like a threat. Another part of the problem in this situation, as the newspaper article notes, is that Black children are often treated like adults. In this case, the 13-year-old girl is Black. She was penalized because, after reasonably perceiving a threat, she confided in her friends (whether for a reality check, a second opinion, emotional support, or all of those) rather than in an adult, as adults wanted her to do.

But the adults decided not to take any action, so what would have been the point of going to an adult?

And it doesn't just affect kids. The dilemma can surface after you grow up too.

What if a child grows up to be trans, and we can't tell that they're trans because they took puberty blockers?

Transphobes want to be able to tell who's trans so that they can target us. They do not want trans people to accidentally or intentionally look cis. They don't want that outcome for us or them or the world. They want a world in which trans kids go through a puberty we don't want to go through and must spend years in adulthood modifying and disguising our bodies — working with whatever we've got — to look how we want to look.

They don't want to help us from childhood to look how we want to look in adulthood because they don't want to help us ever. They don't want us to have certain outcomes. They don't want to allow us to integrate in society. They don't want us to be happy with our own bodies. They don't want us to be able to say "my reproductive system isn't your business." They want our reproductive systems to be their business, in childhood and in adulthood, now and forever.

An Idaho law "bans trans kids from using school facilities that align with their gender identity and offers children a $5,000 bounty for reporting trans students who use the restroom that matches their gender identity." (LGBTQ nation) It should go without saying that offering $5,000 to a child to allege that their classmate might be trans is not a way to get accurate information about who is trans or whether there are shenanigans in bathrooms, nor is it a way to protect trans kids or cis kids. It is a bounty. It encourages false allegations. Even if an allegation is true, it rewards students for transphobic attitudes and actions. It teaches them to police each other's genders. A federal judge temporarily blocked the law from taking effect a week before classes started.

The library was holding a drag queen story hour, and one of the men was openly carrying a gun (legal in Nevada) and approached the library. People 19+ received 10 times as many gender-affirming surgeries.

Can anyone, including a child themselves, know if the child is gay?

The LGB Alliance opposes gay kids. This is a homophobic position. They oppose their own past gay-child selves.

In a four-tweet thread on September 16, 2022, Katy Montgomerie said that LGB Alliance was "claiming that gay kids don't exist." She noted: "Coming out to yourself as gay as a teenager and dealing with the homophobia around etc is such a big deal for so many people. Children go through it alone often[.] A whole generation of kids grew up in Section 28 and were literally on their own, worrying what it meant that they had these feelings and if their friends and families would even love them anymore[.] The LGBT rights orgs that LGB Alliance campaigns against fought for these kids[.]" She adds: "I bet all of them were aware of their sexual orientation before they were 18." "So obsessed with harming trans people that they are willing to throw gay kids under the bus too[.]" And, crucially: "it's not even consistent with another one of their hateful claims: that gay kids are being forced to transition. What gay kids? You don't even believe they exist."

How do you know if a murder victim was trans?

Anti-trans policies make it more likely that trans people will go missing.

Looking for a person in their old name and old gender presentation won't help you find that missing person as they're presenting right now. It's a prejudice against finding people who are living in a gender that doesn't "match" their sex assigned at birth.

In March 2024, Indiana's HB 1291 proposes that law enforcement be required to gather information on the "biological sex" of a missing person.

Anti-trans policies make it more likely that trans people will die.

The medical examiner looks at that person who has (or hasn't) had surgery, does (or doesn't) have updated ID, and may not see "a trans person."

How do you know if any human is trans?

Trans elders exist

The goal of anti-LGBTQ laws is not to protect trans elders, either: In September 2023, four teenagers allegedly broke the jaw of a 72-year-old man while using anti-LGBTQ slurs. They will come after their own, at any age. In November 2023, "a Baptist pastor and small town mayor in Alabama was hounded into suicide by a right wing news site who discovered he had a secret online persona as a trans woman."

U.S. states are handing over the records of transgender patients.

What happened: Trans students who reached discrimination settlements with their school districts with the help of the previous presidential administrations of Barack Obama and Joe Biden have now seen those settlements terminated or reworked. Usually, those settlements involved more teacher training in school districts and more protections for trans kids.

Why it matters: This almost never happens. Usually, a presidential administration will leave in place settlements from previous administrations, even if they disagree with them. And one of the school districts affected has already voted to roll back its protections for trans kids.
